The Day Thread Changes the Channel to UHF

UHF was released on July 21st, 1989.

The synopsis for this cult classic – “After losing yet another job, George (Weird Al Yankovic) wonders if there is any career that can handle his outrageous personality. When George’s uncle (Stanley Brock) hands him the deed to a local TV station, George creates a series of television shows based on social satire and hyperactive humor, with the help of his best friend, Bob (David Bowe). However, a rival station’s bitter CEO (Kevin McCarthy) tries to destroy George’s wacky programming, forcing him to fight back.”

The film also stars Victoria Jackson, Michael Richards, Gedde Watanabe, Billy Bart, and Fran Drescher.

A callback to such comedy classics as Kentucky Fried Movie and Amazon Women on the Moon, UHF would only make $6.1 million dollars on a $5 million dollar budget. UHF got lost in the shuffle of a massive summer movie blockbuster season. However, time has been kind to this comedy. It has achieved cult status and fondly recalled by myself and many close friends that can quote this movie ad nauseam.

Let’s celebrate Weird Al and UHF today in the Day Thread. Tell us your favorite segment or spoof in the comments section below!
