The robot H.E.R.B.I.E was introduced in Fantastic Four #209 in August 1979.

H.E.R.B.I.E stands for Highly Engineered Robot Built for Interdimensional Exploration.

H.E.R.B.I.E was introduced in the Fantastic Four cartoon, replacing the Human Torch as a member. The Human Torch character was optioned for a solo movie (which never materialized). Frank Welker voiced H.E.R.B.I.E.

The robot ally of the Fantastic Four would be introduced into Marvel Comics continuity shortly thereafter.
