Avengers: Endgame is coming out this week, and everyone’s got people with superhuman strength and fancy, brandable tights on their mind (Avengers novelty baseball jerseys now available at Box Lunch!)… so let’s talk about another superhero movie featuring Josh Brolin in an antagonist role that I enjoyed recently.
Deadpool 2 is full of moments where they use a song ironically, and yet it’s damn affecting at the same time. Take, for example, the time that they play “Tomorrow” from Annie (which was taken from the Disney Made-For-TV version). They set you up to expect a joke. A song from a Broadway musical aimed at kids? And they’re tying it to that walking meatslab with pouches, Cable? Are you kidding me? Yet, it’s almost the perfect pick. It strongly to Cable’s tragedy and his hope that can change fate.
It’s close to being my number one moment from the movie.
This moment is topped by the only instance when a slowed-down pop song never came across as laughable to me. Wade Wilson finally gets his wish. He dies. It’s comedically stretched out and scored to the same score as Logan‘s death scene. Then he finally gets to tough Vanessa in the afterlife. Wade is restored to his Ryan Reynolds self, they embrace, and an acoustic version (recorded on MTV Unplugged) of a-Ha’s “Take On Me” plays. In a movie where Ryan Reynolds Basic Instinct’s the audience, various jokes at the expense of the MCU and the DCEU are slung, and where the Juggernaut gets an electric cable shoved up his butt… it’s genuinely touching.
Given how the soundtrack selections are integral to the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, I was surprised to discover that they were outdone by a Deadpool movie. This is probably because Deadpool switched composers: Junkie XL in the first movie was replaced by Tyler Bates for the sequel, who many of you are already familiar with as the composer … of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies.
