Box Office: January 11-13

The new year is into its second frame and Aquaman finally no longer has the top spot since its debut last month. Topping the box office is The Upside with Kevin Hart and Bryan Cranston where it did just under $20 million on its $37 million budget. STX marketed it well and held off on really promoting it a lot until just before Christmas. It leaned more female at 59% of the audience and 74% over 25, so it could have some decent legs – especially with an “A” CinemaScore. It’ll be interesting to see if the original R-rated cut will be made available through the home video side.

Aquaman shifted to the second place position where it did another $17 million to bring it to just under $288 million domestically. It’s still got a ways to go to move past other recent films as Suicide Squad is at $325 million and Wonder Woman is up at $412 million. But in terms of worldwide, the film is nearly at the top and will cross there easily. It added another $28 million this weekend which brings its overseas to $732 million and a worldwide of $1.020 billion. The only DC superhero film above that is The Dark Knight Rises at $1.084 billion, which this will cross in a couple of weeks.

Things are going well for Spider-man: Into the Spider-Verse as the film picked up its Golden Globe win last weekend and added another $9 million over the weekend to bring it to $147.7 million. It’s definitely a winner for Sony Pictures Animation and gives hope that some more animated features will be explored. Its international take is at $300 million now.

In terms of new films, A Dog’s Way Home did pretty well with an $11.3 million debut on an $18 million budget and it’ll provide some decent family counterprogramming for the next few weeks.

On the Basis of Sex expanded wide this weekend and it landed in 8th position with a $6.2 million take that helped it to cross the $10 million market and get an “A” CinemaScore. Also expanding this weekend was If Beale Street Could Take is at added almost 700 screens to bring in $2.38 million.

The latest from Keanu Reeves didn’t go over well, pretty much as expected as it fit into the January shovelware sense, as Replicas did $2.5 million and only made 12th place.

Next weekend sees the debut of The Heiresses from Distrib Films while Universal brings Glassinto 3,500 screens. IFC has the single-screen launch of An Acceptable Loss and Social Media Productions has Adult Life Skills.
