This week’s prompt: A different kind of cover.

What record has the best physical presentation? What’s your flavor of presentation? Sincere or gimmicky? Unappetizing or beautiful? Minimal or sumptuous?

One of the favorites here at Moon! Base Alpha is Barnes & Barnes’ Fish Heads.

Just look at that thing! That fish head there… It’s the record. Not a 12″, not quite a 7″ but to my eyes, it’s lovely. And it has what is probably the first song I can remember loving absolutely. And I found it on the island of Maui on my honeymoon. All of these things make this a truly lovely package.

Another favorite is the super deluxe reissue of Slint’s Spiderland, shown in the header. It’s a record that gets regular play at the Moon! Base. It’s highly regarded as a post-rock cornerstone. The deluxe edition comes with a well done remaster of the album, two LPs of outtakes and demos, both of these on CDs for your ripping convenience, a DVD of Breadcrumb Trail, a documentary on the band directed by Lance Bangs, and a 104 page 12×12″ book filled with lyrics, remembrances and photographs, all in a heavy cardboard box. It’s a lovely package and worth every penny.
