The Collectible Card Games Thread – What’s in a Name?

Welcome to the *CG thread, where we talk all manner of Card Games – Collectible, Trading, Living, and otherwise! Feel free to chat amongst yourselves about the card games you’re playing or anything card game-related that strikes your fancy.

The new Unique Deck Game, Keyforge, got in trouble recently because its procedural deck naming randomizer went a little off the rails, throwing in words like “Bonerider” and “Racism”. And I get it, name-generating robot – naming decks is hard! But you didn’t have to resort to shock tactics to achieve vaguely apropos absurdism.

There are at least three schools of thought when it comes to deck naming. First and most boring is utilitarian – your Quest Rogue or your Ramunap Red or Zombie Hunt. Just take some accurate descriptor of the deck and throw one or two card names from the deck in the title (or in the case of Zombie Hunt, the only two card names) and there you go.

Next there’s the legacy naming: just blindly steal the name of something that came before, regardless of whether it fits the deck you made now. Ever wonder why Modern Affinity decks don’t have any cards with the Affinity keyword? Because Tradition. Feel free to pretend I put a Zero Mostel gif there.

And then there’s what I like to call “Nonsense Ouroboros” naming. When names intentionally or unintentionally get so self-referential and impenetrably obtuse as to become meaningless. Exodia Mage is a moderate example. Then you have stuff like Magical Christmas Land, where it originally had at least a modicum of meaning (because it was Red and Green) but the meaning has shifted and has lost nearly all meaning. Or to have weird chains of traditional naming, like a series of combo decks named after breakfast for no discernable reason, notably Trix, Full English Breakfast, and Cephalid Breakfast, Cephalids being some sort of delicious squid people.

This week’s prompt: Do you name your decks? What’s your favorite deck name?

Or, as always, feel free to talk about anything going on with you in the world of *CGs.
