Tim overcame a slow start and some incorrect guesses to score impressively in DJ, getting the round’s two DDs correct to show the way into FJ with $17,400 vs. $16,800 for Jack and $11,800 for Rhea.
DD1 – U.S. CITIES – This New England capital shares its name James Madison’s Virginia plantation (Tim lost $1,800 on a true DD.)

Tim and Jack were correct on FJ, with Tim putting his potential wild card spot on the line and wagering as if this was a regular game by betting $16,201. Tim advanced with $33,601 while Jack improved by $1,200 and had a wild card wrapped up with $18,000.
Rhea lost $5,000 to finish with $6,800, which is the score to beat for the fourth and final wild card spot. On Tuesday’s show, both non-winners can advance if they score at least $17,000 as the third wild card currently belongs to Claire at $16,999. The other player assured to advance with a wild card is Emma at $18,400.
Triple Stumpers of the day: The teens didn’t know the vertical style of piano is upright, the disorder characterized by sudden bouts of sleep is narcolepsy, and never heard of a lucky horseshoe above a door.
No harm no foul: Everyone took an incorrect guess on the vocal range that means “the general sense of something”, tenor.
This day in Trebekistan: Before FJ, Alex stated that the players had “an awful lot of money accumulated”, but in the opening round of a tournament, those are only scores that don’t translate into actual dollars.
