The Tragic Treasury by the Gothic Archies (one of several pseudonymous bands that are actually just 99% Stephin Merritt of The Magnetic Fields) was the first album I purchased and consumed on my own terms, in sixth grade in 2006. It consists of the thirteen songs included on the audiobooks for A Series of Unfortunate Events, plus two bonus tracks. Initially, the lyrics are yolked tightly to the plots of the books, starting with the expository “Scream and Run Away” and synthy “In the Reptile Room”, but eventually the novels become mere suggestions, as in the slow, sardonic “Smile! No One Cares How You Feel”, the experimental dirge “A Million Mushrooms”, and the peppy, doomed irony of “Shipwrecked”.
If you’re in the right twee, tweedy state of mind it’s a fun listen any time of year, but I think it plays especially well in the lead-up to Halloween.
