The Collectible Card Game Thread – Art!

Welcome to the *CG thread, where we talk all manner of Card Games – Collectible, Trading, Living, and otherwise! Feel free to chat amongst yourselves about the card games you’re playing or anything card game-related that strikes your fancy.

One of the biggest features of a card, while at the same time one of the most often ignored, is the art.

Taking up nearly half (or sometimes more) of the card, the art takes a lot of work. And in deference to that, it does a lot of work in return, even if much of it is invisible or unnoticed. Art is the easiest way to recognize a card across the table. Art sets a color scheme and mood for the card. And the art style of the game overall sets the tone for the game. From early Magic’s sometimes scattershot art direction to Yu-gi-oh’s and Pokémon’s drastically different takes on an anime-inspired style, to the lightly humorous Hearthstone, to modern Magic’s exhaustively style-guided worldbuilding-focused art, good art means that you can easily identify what kind of game you’re playing at the barest glance.

Here’s some random cards with art that I like for various reasons:
