Happy Tuesday, fellow creatives and others! I was planning on making this an open thread this week, but figured, for a potential discussion, I’d amplify a conversation UtopianMonk and I had in the comments several threads back. Self-publishing! What are your experiences and/or thoughts thereon?

I never had any direct experience with self-publishing myself, back in my writing days, though I often wanted to write a novella specifically for self-publishing just to see what the experience was like (not least as no publisher or venue was–or is, I understand–likely to touch a novella, quality or author aside, with a ten foot pole). Since turning to the more visual arts, it’s been interesting to marinate in a culture where self-publishing (at least when it comes to webcomics) is pretty much fundamental to its identity.

Today’s header is an engraving of the workshop of Renaissance artist and engraver Jost Amman (1539-91), born in Switzerland but who worked most of his life in Nuremberg, and who was most prolific in the field of woodcuts, another creative endeavor to which self-publishing was arguably fundamental (a friend of mine is a prolific woodcut artist himself, but though I find them intriguing, it’s always felt to me like scanning my drawings onto the laptop and having them available for future use–reproduction, color, etc.–fulfills much the same function).
