Jeopardy! recap for Tue., Jun. 5

Jeopardy! recap for Tue., Jun. 5 – Here are today’s contestants:

– Megan, a public defender from St. Louis, MO, whose cats taught her parents’ kitties some nasty habits;
– Joe, a comptroller from Pasadena, CA, who is a Cleveland sports fan; and
– Leslie, a bookseller from Vancouver, WA, who went on a yarn crawl. Leslie is a one-day champ with winnings of $599.

Joe, who ran a sports category early on, made a potentially costly error on a geography clue, allowing Megan to find DD2. But she couldn’t take advantage, so Joe maintained a runaway into FJ with $12,600 vs. $3,600 for Megan and $2,600 for Leslie.

DD1 – TRUE CRIME BOOKS, SWEETHEART – “The Skies Belong to Us” narrates one 1972 instance of this crime that was unfortunately big in that era (Joe lost $1,000)

DD2 – GEOGRAPHY “B” – In 2017 Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah marked 50 years on the throne of this country (Megan lost $4,000)

DD3 – PORTUGAL, THE MAN – Despite his nickname, this prince who sponsored many voyages didn’t go on the expeditions himself (Joe lost $1,000)

FJ – FICTIONAL CHARACTERS – He got a real N.Y. Times obit in 1975; it said he wore “false mustaches to mask signs of age that offended his vanity”

For the second time this week, no one was correct on FJ, with Joe dropping $3,216 to win with $9,384.

In the race for second money, Leslie bet everything except $5, when the percentage play would have been to bet $0 and hope for Megan to miss. However, instead of betting just enough to cover double of Leslie’s score, Megan made a wagering mistake of her own by wagering it all except $2 to wind up in third.

So with her $2,000 award for second place with a score of $5, Leslie won $1,401 more in real money than finishing first in the previous game with $599. In my humble opinion, this looks silly and makes the show appear cheap, which is why I submit that every Jeopardy! champion get a $5,000 minimum.

Triple Stumpers of the day: No one guessed that after fleeing Portugal, Pedro I became emperor of Brazil, or knew the “beastly” interjection of broadcaster Phil Rizzuto, “Holy cow!”

Correct Qs:
DD1 – What is skyjacking?
DD2 – What is Brunei?
DD3 – Who was Henry the Navigator?
FJ – Who is Hercule Poirot?
