Today was Josephine Baker’s birthday. Baker was an American-born French singer, actress, dancer, is World War II spy and Civil Rights activist.
Baker was the first person of color to become a world renowned performer and star in a major motion picture the 1934 Marc Allégret film Zouzou.
Baker refused to perform in front of segregated audiences in America, worked with the NAACP and spoke at the 1963 March on Washington. Baker also aided the French resistance in World War II. She was awarded the Croix de guerre by the French military, and was named a Chevalier of the Légion d’honneurby General Charles de Gaulle.
