Box Office: May 18 – 20, 2018

Captain Video can’t get into WordPress right now.

YOUR BOX OFFICE NUMBERS (from Box Office Mojo)

1. Deadpool 2
2. Avengers: Infinity War
3. Book Club
4. Life of the Party
5. Breaking In

WordPress is down, so I’m currently writing this in a notepad document to be ready when I reclaim access. Deadpool 2 opened on a massive scale, taking in $125M on a $110M budget, numbers that suggest your cineplex will have at least one superhero movie in it every week until you die. Infinity War was bumped down to second, taking in $28.7M for a cumulative $595M. That’s a very large number, but it’s still a full $100M shy of Black Panther (now 13th).

Book Club opened in third, bringing in $12.5M for Paramount. Between this and A Quiet Place (now 8th, with a $176M total), they’re having their first good season in awhile. Show Dogs – you know, Show Dogs – opened in sixth, with $6M. (According to BOM, that’s “among some of the worst openings all-time for a film debuting in over 3,000 theaters.”)

Further down, the documentary Pope Francis – A Man of His Word opened at #16 in 346 theaters, and 2001: A Space Odyssey (#20) was re-released in 70mm at four lucky theaters nowhere near me. A Wrinkle in Time, which got a bump last week, lost 1,750 theaters and dropped like a stone from 11th to 23rd. Even further down, Bad Samaritan dropped 1,498 theaters in its third weekend, and the remaining 48 took in $14,500, an astounding 97.2% drop.

BONUS ROUND: Can anyone tell me what the last weekend the American box office didn’t have any superhero movies playing in it somewhere? I’m suddenly curious.
