MLB News

• The Mariners got a double whammy of bad news this week. First Robinson Cano went down with a fracture in his right hand that required surgery. Then shortly after it came out that Cano had failed a drug test over the winter with the drug detected being a known masking agent for PED use (Cano says it was legitimately prescribed to him by a doctor in the Dominican Republic to treat an illness). Cano will remain out until sometime in August and lose out on close to $10 million in salary. Not to mention the potential long term consequences once his career ends and writers begin to look at him in regards to a potential case for Cooperstown (no player who has failed a drug test has made it in). The Mariners for now look to be moving Dee Gordon back to 2B after converting him to centerfield in spring training. Should they go looking for another bat they’ve got the flexibility to consider both middle infield and outfield options (even with Gordon in the infield now they’ve got two players capable of handling CF defensively at least in Mitch Haniger and Guillermo Heredia).

• On the heels of the news about Roberto Osuna last week, another young player is facing charges of domestic violence. Ji-hwan Bae, an 18 year old prospect for the Pittsburgh Pirates, has had a formal complaint filed against him by his girlfriend in South Korea that he physically and verbally abused her on New Years Eve this past year. Bae has flown home and police in South Korea are investigating as is MLB (Bae is not on the 40 man roster for Pittsburgh so his case may not fall under the same guidelines as Osuna’s, but even so it’s safe to assume there are similar guidelines for minor league roster players).

• Bit of news I missed a couple weeks ago, but the two sons of Victor Mesa, legendary 19 year veteran of the Cuban leagues and manager of Cuba’s World Baseball Classic team in the past have left Cuba with the intention of seeking out careers in Major League Baseball. 21 year old Victor Victor Mesa and 16 year old Victor Mesa Jr. have both already acquired representation and now face the long process of being declared free agents by Major League Baseball and eligible to sign (which could take anywhere from several months to over a year). The elder brother’s skillset has been compared to Victor Robles (the #1 ranked prospect in the Washington Nationals system and a consensus top 10 prospect overall) and has already played 6 seasons professionally in Cuba. There’s far less scouting information available on Victor Jr. but teams are reportedly interested.

• Something fun/touching to end on. Drew Butera is the Royal’s backup catcher, so he’s probably not the best known player out there. But a couple years ago he promised then 7 year old Dagan Lingenfelter that when he beat cancer, he could dye Butera’s hair any color of his choosing (Dagan was in the midst of chemo treatments for acute limphoblastic leukemia at the time). Now he’s a year plus into remission, so Drew lived up to his word. Short video below, worth the watch!
