Anime Worth Watching: Cyber Team in Akihabara (Ep 6-10)

Cyber Team in Akihabara (アキハバラ電脳組) is a 1998, 25-episode magical girl sci-fi anime created by  Tsukasa Kotobuki and Satoru Akahori. This review is specifically for episodes 6-10.

Episode 6 throws the viewer in medias res, so a lot of information is gathered through dialog that assumes one has seen episodes 1-5. The story follows Hibari Hanakoganei, a junior high student, presumably living in Akihabara. She and her two friends face life crises, such as needing to make delicious curry, and fighting strange women villains named Bloody Falcon, Death Crow, and Dark Pigeon. The girls use their flying potato(?) assistant pet monsters to turn into (or maybe summon) adult hero ladies. There is a side-plot about a mysterious man with a pocket bear, who is probably a villain, as well as a mustachioed man with an assistant who has sculpted her hair to match his mustache.

The heroines of the story: Suzume, Hibari, and the other one.

Episodes 6-10 of Cyber Team in Akihabara are, frankly, amazing to behold. From Suzume’s odd speech patters (that they are), to the mystery of the pocket bear and the dream prince, to Dark Pigeon’s name, the viewer will be blasted with emotions such as confusion, hilarity, anger, bafflement, and disgust. Truly a wild ride from start to finish, these episodes provide the perfect amount of information to give a general idea of what is happening, but absolutely no idea of why.

This show is terrible.

Weeb level: 7/10. A lot of the jumps in logic here are predicated on magical girl logic. The whole thing is a mess, but a slightly-less-confusing mess if you’ve seen some anime.

Fanservice: Terrible/10. All of the main characters are like 12. It’s awful.

Quality: 0/10. The appeal of this show is its complete lack of quality. The character designs are ugly, the plot threads are cribbed, the animation is lacking, the writing is unintelligible. It’s great.

Where to Watch: A cursed DVD that I received in a grab-bag at an anime convention.
