Musicals Thread (Not So Famous)

Welcome! The purpose of this thread is to talk about all things related to the wonderful world of musical theatre. Each week (or so) I will post a thread with a topic/question for everyone to respond to. This is also a great place to mention any new musicals you’ve discovered and/or general recommendations for other musical fans. Heard/seen any good shows lately? Have any theatre news to share? Tell us about it!

There are probably a lot of musicals that I haven’t heard of. That’s one of the reasons that I started this thread—I love learning about new things and getting recommendations. So far, I’ve already discovered a few really great musicals thanks to all of you, and I hope to keep discovering new shows. With that in mind, I’d like to ask you all about less famous musicals that you like. Are there any shows that you’re fond of that you don’t hear other people talking about very often? I’d love to hear about them!

I’ll take this opportunity to talk briefly about a show called Honk! You may have heard of it, but I’ve never met anyone who knows this show outside of the people I went to high school with. We put the show on at my school. I was responsible for the spotlights, which made me feel very important at the time. I really enjoyed the lights in this show because we used lots of blues and greens to create aquatic scenery during the swimming scenes. And, because I was in the light booth for several rehearsals and every performance, I saw this show several times. Instead of getting sick of it, I became very fond of it. The premise is incredibly simple: it’s a retelling of The Ugly Duckling. The music is cute and catchy, nothing revolutionary, but I like it. I can see why schools are drawn to this show.

I was very fond of this song because there was a lot for me to do with the spotlight, and I often find myself singing it to myself for no reason at all.

This was the song that always stole the show because the person playing the Bullfrog was so energetic. I felt very proud during this number because I convinced our director to let me make the spotlight decisions. It was a super small thing, but I was young and small things seemed really big.

So, what about you? Are there any shows that you’re fond of that you don’t hear other people talking about very often?
