By now, you’ve probably heard of the controversy surrounding the latest incarnation of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, with many fans expressing their thoughts in both civil and downright crass ways once the reboot’s edgy character design’s were revealed. Now Nickelodeon has released the first trailer, and it’s…probably going to do nothing to sway people one way or the other.
What we do get here is a sense of the tone the relaunch is going for, which looks to be much less violent and intense than the 2012 Turtles (and boy, is this reboot not wasting its time getting made, since the last series ended only last year). The biggest shift we have is Raph in the position of leader of the turtles, while Leo is now…cracking wise and making his brothers roll their eyes. There’s also Mikey, who’s still Mikey, along with a slightly more ticked-off Donnie who for whatever reason looks like he might be the coolest character this time.
There’s not much revealed about the plot, except that the turtles will indeed be ninjas, April will be joining in from time to time, and Splinter looking like he came straight out of an Adult Swim cartoon. There’s no sign of Shredder anywhere–possibly because there have been rumors that he’s not in the reboot at all–but there are still a variety of new foes at hand to keep the lives of the turtles from being too laid back.
All in all, it looks…different. And as is so often the case with these things, we probably aren’t going to have a taste of what we’re getting until the premiere (or at least until the panel at Comic-Con this summer). Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles arrives on Nick in September.
