The Lies of Locke Lamora Night Thread

One of my current favorite book series in the fantasy genre is The Gentleman Bastard Sequence by Scott Lynch. Its very Renaissance Italy influenced in names, and culture.  They are about the Gentleman Bastards, Locke Lamora, Jean Tannen, and Calo and Galdo Sanza. The idea is they are the first people to make con artist a real thing, with fake identities and elaborate cons. They were trained by a priest that is a follower of the god of theft, pretending to be a priest of poverty,  to steal and thieve from everyone. One thing I like is the book hints at is they don’t know what to do with all the money they steal, they can’t spend it, they are suppose to be poor priest poverty so they just collect it.

The first book is all about introducing the characters and the world. It involves the under world of crime and a power struggle when the head of the crime in the city has to deal with a new power player, and due to the Gentleman Bastards skills at thievery and cons they get swept up in it fight.

The Second is about a heist for some rare paints in a casino. Yeah, fantasy Ocean’s Eleven works for the first fourth of the book then it becomes a high seas adventure with a Pirate Queen, who might be one of the biggest badasses and coolest character I have read in a fantasy series. Its also where the cast starts to become more heroic and good in natured.

The Third is a political thriller that is about wizard elections and rigging it so the worst people can not gain power also about lost love and trying to move on through poor choices made in life.

The series is full of witty dialog and interesting but flawed characters. Its full of really strong world building that is not just pages of exposition. If you like fantasy series give it a try.

Have fun posting tonight and have a great night.

P.S. Like this picture of the cast.
