On this night, all the way back in 1937, Walt Disney’s Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs premiered.

 

I would give my front teeth to go back in time and to have seen it that night.  Don’t know how well theater seats would have fit my morbidly obese behind back then, but that’s besides the point.  I want to have experienced this at the moment and to see the people’s reactions, especially with the following scenes:

And while I couldn’t find the clip, I especially would have loved to have seen how people would have reacted to the seemingly dead Snow White and the Dwarfs crying.  From what I’ve heard and read, people wept when it looked like she died.  Including men.  Not just any men, but 1930s men.  Men who didn’t really show such emotions back then.

Disney and his staff did the impossible and made people cry over a cartoon character’s supposed death.  That’s remarkable.

Snow White maybe one of my favorite Disney characters and she is a strong character.  She goes through that dark forest in a panic, but she’s still alert enough to grab hold of a vine to break her fall into a pit.  And when she finds that the scary eyes were really just woodland creatures who aren’t going to harm her, she says she’s embarrassed to have let her fears get the best of her.  Despite knowing her stepmother wants her dead, she’s still able to find the power to be cheerful and hopeful.  When the animals lead her to the Dwarfs cottage, she takes charge in cleaning it up.  Yes, she’s doing domestic work, but she does because she figures that the cottage is the home of orphans.  She’s taking it upon herself to be a mother figure to them – a good stepmother, as it were.  Even when she finds that the cottage is the home of the Dwarfs, she still acts as a mother to a bunch of grown up children.  Yes, her pure heart proves to be her Achilles Heel, but does that make her a weak woman or character?  No, it doesn’t.  In an age of pessimism, Snow White proves her strength by not giving in to fear of the Wicked Queen and continues to live her life.  And, if Snow White hadn’t shown up, The Dwarfs would have ended up on the fairy tale land version of Hoarders.  So, she shows strength in being feminine.  I don’t see how this is a bad thing?
